Richard Nelson is the Deputy Coordinator for Power Africa based in the USAID/Southern Africa Mission in Pretoria. Previously he was the Senior Resident Legal Officer in the USAID/Southern Africa Mission and was also posted in Bangkok and Baghdad. Prior to joining USAID Richard worked for Dell Inc in Austin, Texas, as an Emerging Markets Strategist working closely with foreign governments in negotiating investment MOUs, advocating corporate interests and analyzing economic development trends. While at Dell he also was involved in corporate social responsibility efforts in India relating to education sponsorship. Prior to joining Dell, Richard worked for Wachovia Bank and the law firm of McGuire Woods in Charlotte, North Carolina, focusing on capital markets credit transactions. Richard also spent a year as an English professor at Qingdao University in China. Richard is a graduate of Harvard Law School (J.D., 1998) and Brigham Young University (B.A. English, minor in Russian, 1995) and is a member of the North Carolina and D.C. Bars.
