Antonio Maria was born in southeastern Brazil in the state of Minas Gerais, which is famous for its beautiful mountains and rich mineral resources. One of ten siblings, Antonio took great interest in history and geography from an early age.
He studied mining engineering in the city of Ouro Preto and later business administration, with a specialization in mineral technology. He also has a Masters in Mining Technology from the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
On completion of his studies, Antonio Maria went to work in the Amazon rainforest, following in the footsteps of his father – a forestry technician.
He joined ArcelorMittal in 2010, following a 19-year mining career that included working for Vale in Brazil.
After a short period working for ArcelorMittal Brazil, Antonio moved to ArcelorMittal Mexico Mines where he was the chief operating officer.
In November 2012, he assumed his current role as chief executive officer (CEO) of ArcelorMittal Liberia, where he brings his extensive experience in iron ore operations in similar climates, and his experience and leadership skills.
