Ethiopia’s mining sector is undergoing a tremendous transformation, offering an increase in investment opportunities. Since the discovery of large minerals deposits in 2014 there has been a global rush of miners flocking in to exploit what the country has to offer. Ethiopia’s mineral wealth, combined with a young and highly motivated workforce and attractive customs and tax exemptions on mining equipment and machinery, provides for a thriving and profitable mining sector. Furthermore, the liberation of mining laws and policies are set to catapult Ethiopia as a favourite investment destination.
It is worth noting that although mining is emerging as an important component to Ethiopia’s economy, the industry only still accounts for 1% of the GDP. Therefore, it is with this in mind that AME Trade in partnership with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Mines have organised the 2nd Ethiopian International Mining Conference. The inaugural Ethiopia Mining International Conference was a huge success and attracted more than 300 participants from over 22 countries. The event set the stage for increasing the visibility of the country’s mining potential and its positioning as an economic driver, which will form the backbone of the 2nd edition programme.
The theme for the 2017 conference is “Ethiopia’s mining sector: working towards stronger, inclusive sustainable growth”
“The first Ethiopia International Mining Conference & Exhibition (EIMC) took place from 24-25 September 2015 at the United Nations Conference Centre. The objective of the Conference was to promote the Ethiopia’s Mining industry and to create a platform to strengthen business partnerships among all stakeholders, by looking at current challenges and future perspectives.
The conference brought together policy makers, investors, industry experts, development partners and other key stakeholders in the Ethiopia’s mining sector. We would like to thank all 300 participants, exhibitors, sponsors, speakers for making the inaugural event a huge success. EIMC represents a positive step forward for the mining industry in Ethiopia and we look forward to continuing strengthening this path.”
