The 8th edition of Zambia International Mining and Energy Conference & Exhibition brought together over 190 delegates from 12 countries, including Australia, Canada, Chile, China, France, Italy, Kenya, Netherlands, South Africa, United Kingdom, Zambia, Zimbabwe.

Carrying on from the 2017 edition, ZIMEC 2018 addresses the growth and diversification of the mining & energy sectors in the country. This year’s theme was “Invest in Zambia – Generating Value, Diversity and Growth Through Collaboration”. Optimizing resource industry linkages becomes essential in developing the supporting industries of the sector and creating infrastructure, ensuring the creation of a resource industry that is more robust and that contributes to sustainable economic development of the country. The event is acting as the optimal platform for public and private stakeholders to congregate to meet new prospective business partners and do business in Zambia.

Fast Facts

Zambia is Africa’s largest producer of Copper and Cobalt.  Other minerals are also found in the country, including cobalt, gold, silver and iron ore. In addition, Zambia is a major source of precious stones, including emeralds, aquamarines, amethyst and tourmalines.

A new analysis of mining in Zambia for the past 100 years shows a clear historical link between
levels of mining investment and wider economic development.

Zambia’s energy sources include; electricity, petroleum, coal, biomass, and renewable energy.

The building of the Kariba dam was a great feat of engineering, requiring almost three million tons of concrete (enough for a road from Zambia to Russia). Completed in 1959, the resulting hydro-electric power has been important for the mining industry.

ZESCO Limited is a vertically integrated electricity utility, which generates, transmits, distributes
and supplies electricity in Zambia

Although power is relatively cheap and plentiful, only around a fifth of Zambians have access to electricity and just 3% of the population in rural areas.
