Ethiopia mining: major projects, mineral potential, and new government incentives for investors

This report is derived from the conclusions and recommendations made at the second Ethiopian International mining conference which took place in Addis Ababa from 25th to 26th November 2019. The theme of the conference was “transforming potential into production by creating an attractive mining investment framework”.
The conference was organized by Ministry of Mines and Petroleum of Ethiopia, AME Trade, and Flawless Events.
This report showcases investment opportunities and presents case studies from both projects in development and existing projects. The report will also inform stakeholders of the reforms that have been initiated to facilitate investment in the mining sector.

The report examines how the business climate can be improved, to promote the mining sector and how to gain investment finance for investors.

Independent experts believe that Western Ethiopia potentially has the largest gold deposits in Africa. The country is gaining notoriety in the global gemstone market: 2,290 kgs of emeralds were exported (2017) and sapphires (2016) were also discovered in the Tigray Regional State. Ethiopia could challenge the Australian opal. Between 2000 – 2014, Ethiopia’s export of opals increased by 136.6%.

The country is also the sixth biggest producer of tantalum worldwide. Industrial minerals such as: sodas, kaolin, quartz, feldspar, silica sand, limestone, clay and gypsum, as well as construction materials such as sand, gravel, scoria and crushed stones. could make Ethiopia a leading export hub. Potash production is located on the central parts of the Danakil Depression in the Northern part of Ethiopia.

The recent peace settlement between Ethiopia and Eritrea means that access to the port has facilitated cheaper access to market for potash producers. Ethiopia is perfectly placed to satisfy global battery minerals demand with graphite reserves of estimated 460,000 tons at the Moyale deposit. Lithium has also been identified in the salt brines of the marine strata of Southern Ethiopia and the Afar rift
