The 12th Mozambique Mining and Energy Conference and Exhibition (MMEC 2026) officially commenced today at the Joaquim Chissano International Conference Centre in Maputo, convening government leaders, global energy executives, mining stakeholders, financial institutions, development partners and technical experts to discuss the future of Mozambique’s mining, energy and industrial sectors.
Held under the theme “Mozambique: Open for Business – Unlocking Natural Resources for Industrialisation, Diversification and Inclusive Growth,” the conference is reaffirming Mozambique’s growing strategic importance within Southern Africa’s energy and extractive industries while promoting stronger regional cooperation, infrastructure integration and sustainable industrial development.
Opening the conference, President of the Republic of Mozambique, Daniel Chapo, highlighted Mozambique’s privileged geographic position and its vast natural resource potential, stressing that the country seeks not only to export resources, but also to accelerate industrialisation, diversify the economy and create long-term value for Mozambicans through local content development and regional integration.
Mozambique’s Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, Estevão Pale, emphasised that MMEC continues to serve as a strategic platform for investment promotion and policy dialogue.
The opening programme also featured a High-Level Roundtable on partnerships for transformation and regional integration, bringing together ministers and senior government representatives from across Southern Africa.
The Oil and Gas Panel explored Mozambique’s rapidly expanding LNG and hydrocarbons sector, while executives from ExxonMobil, TotalEnergies, ENI, Sasol and other industry leaders reaffirmed their long-term confidence in Mozambique’s gas sector.
The conference further addressed sustainable mining and responsible resource governance during the Extractive Industries and Mining Panel, which examined how Mozambique can strengthen local value addition, industrial competitiveness and resilient regional supply chains.
Energy access, electrification and regional energy security were also central themes during discussions focused on scaling up clean energy investment, renewable energy expansion and transmission infrastructure.
The conference also examined financing requirements for the next generation of mining and energy megaprojects in Mozambique, focusing on infrastructure financing, legal reforms and investment predictability.
Throughout the day, a consistent message emerged across all sessions: Mozambique’s future growth will depend not only on resource extraction, but on transforming natural wealth into industrial capacity, energy security, regional integration and inclusive socio-economic development.
MMEC 2026 continues tomorrow with additional high-level discussions focused on upstream gas development, energy infrastructure, downstream markets, local content and investment partnerships aimed at shaping a sustainable and competitive future for Mozambique’s mining and energy sectors.
